>Do you feel inspired and hopeful most days? Are you creative and focused? Energised and motivated, with a vision for the future?
These days I can answer yes- I am inspired and hopeful, creative and motivated- for a fair proportion of my time. I also have a vision for my future which propels me forward. But this wasn’t always the case. If you’d asked me 10 years ago, you would have got a very different answer. I was feeling beaten up by life, and defeated. I couldn’t see that my life had much purpose, beyond that of parenting my children through their teenage years.
However, I’ve been on a spiritual journey since then, and writing therapy has played an important part in my development. I’ve grown in my understanding of where I fit into the universe, and what my purpose is. Yes, I believe there is an inspiring destiny and divine purpose for each one of us, if we commit to seeking it out through prayer and journaling.
And when we find our true mission in life- the real reason we were born- we will also receive access to all of the resources in the universe to fulfill our ordained purpose. When we go after our true calling in life with faith, our material and spiritual needs will be met.
Once we have received a revelation of our purpose, then we find everything else falls into place. There are no co-incidences and we begin to see the underlying meaning in the events that have happened to us.
Where are you on your spiritual journey? Talk about this is your personal journal. Your experience will be different to mine, and your journal is a safe place to explore where you are right now. Don’t worry if, at the current time, you feel completely baffled about your purpose in life. There is a deep spiritual truth: “Everyone who asks, receives; and he who seeks, finds; and to him who knocks, it will be opened”.
Journal prompts for seeking your purpose
So ask your journal some searching questions. Address them to the highest power you know, whether that is God or simply your higher self. It can be in the form of a prayer if you are comfortable with that. Here are some possible questions you could ask in your journal:
If you don’t like those particular questions, just invent your own. The main thing is to get into the flow with your journaling, and listen to the still small voice inside that wants to direct you with absolute love. If you hear negative stuff about yourself, that’s not the right voice- tell it to take a running jump.
Awakening your destiny is not quick or easy for most of us, it usually takes time. The folk wisdom that says “when one door closes, another opens”, is often true. A few years ago I went for a job that I particularly wanted, and was turned down. I talked through my disappointment with my husband, and we both realised that I had been trying to fit myself into a certain mould to get the post. I decided to concentrate on getting the writing projects I truly longed for, and so I went through a “re-brand” which was more about being myself. Recently projects have come my way that have my name written all over them, and I feel I am moving into my divinely ordained purpose.
A book that I have personally found useful in exploring the subject of purpose is Purpose Awakening: Discover the Epic Idea that Motivated Your Birth, written by a well-known pastor in Hollywood called Touré Roberts. This book has been useful to me as I am a Christian, although it may not suit everyone. I am sure there are other good books out there too.
I have found the combination of prayer and therapeutic journaling a potent one. I can truly say my journal has played a huge role in discovering who I am meant to be. I encourage you to trust the journaling journey and ask the questions that will lead you towards your ultimate, life-enhancing purpose.
