Reflective Journaling for Good: The World Needs More Love Letters!

Words have the power to change your mood or your perception in a moment. A few kind words can redeem a terrible day and remind you that things will get better, even when they come from a complete stranger.

The More Love Letters project aims to bring words of love and support to people who need them around the world. Hannah Brencher started the campaign in 2010 when she was a new college graduate living in New York City and struggling with her own depression and loneliness.

She started writing letters for other people who needed a boost and hiding them all over the city – in coat pockets, libraries and cafes – and blogging about them. She suddenly found her inbox inundated with requests for love letters from people all over the world. Now the More Love Letters project connects requests for letters with writers who have words of love and support to give. In the course of 11 months, more than 4,200 love letters have reached individuals globally. What a beautiful testament to the power of writing!

Reflective Writing for a Good Cause

From December 3 to 14, The World Needs More Love Letters is kicking off its biggest campaign to date, and you can use your words to bring joy to someone you may never meet in a place you may never visit.

Here is how it works:

Sign up here as an individual or as a group through your church, writing club, friend circle or school.
• Every day for 12 days, receive a request from someone who needs encouragement this holiday season.
• Within one week, drop a handwritten letter in the mail for each day’s recipient.
• The More Love Letters project will bundle up all of the love letters and send them to their recipients in time for the new year.

Think back to the times in your life when the words of others gave you the support and love you needed to get through a rough spot. Take a little bit of time to do the same for others and send some love this holiday season!

What other ways have you used reflective writing to give encouragement to others? Share your ideas in the comments.
