Life does move pretty fast, and it is important to make time to pause and appreciate the small, simple details that make you happy. If you’re not sure how to start a journal or how to maintain a regular journaling practice, start with this exercise: write down the moments that bring you joy, whether it’s a delicious dinner with old friends or a peaceful moment alone in nature. You will find that the more you record these moments, the more you notice them in your everyday life.
There is no right or wrong way to journal, but here are a few tips for getting started by getting back to basics.
1. Be present and enjoy life’s simple pleasures. Don’t get so caught up taking pictures or taking notes that you don’t get to experience a moment firsthand.
2. If you want to write about something but don’t have your journal with you, jot down short notes so you’ll remember later. These journaling notes can be as simple as a few words to capture sights, smells, tastes and sounds.
3. Set aside a section of your personal journal that is dedicated to an ongoing list of joyful experiences. Add to it gradually every day or as you feel inspired. For example:
• A really good pen
• That moment when you wake up and realize it’s Saturday and not a workday
• The start of football season
• Laughing hysterically in the movie theater
• A chocolate milkshake
• A novel you stay up till 2 a.m. to finish
4. Share pieces of your list with your loved ones. Let them know what is important to you and ask what is on their list.
5. Notice the recurring themes as you are journaling, and seek out more of the experiences that make you happy. Make it a priority to have more moments of joy in your life.
