This coming Sunday is Mother’s Day—how do you plan on spending the day? Will you pamper and celebrate your mother or wife or best friend? Will you get pampered and celebrated by your own family?
Mother’s Day is an occasion to spend time with your family and honor the important women in your life. It is also an opportunity to reflect on what motherhood means to you—regardless if you are a woman or a man, if you have children or not, if your own mother is still alive or not. Use these journal writing prompts to explore your experiences with your mother and the other important mother figures in your life.
6 Meaningful Mother’s Day Journal Writing Prompts
1. Relive a happy memory with your mom.
What is the most joyful time you ever spent with your mother? Pick the first memory that comes to mind and describe it in detail. How old were you? What were you doing? Who else was there? What did the experience mean to you then, and what does it mean now?
2. Reflect on your parental pride.
If you are a mother, describe your proudest moment as a mom so far. Was it the time your son learned to read his first words or the time your daughter left the nest to start college? Recall how you felt at the time and what it meant for you as a mother.
3. Journal with your children.
If you have school-age kids, pick a few journal prompts and write about them together for Mother’s Day. For example, make a list of all the things you love about your mom (or your kids) or write about what you would do if you could switch roles for the day like in “Freaky Friday.”
4. Write about your honorary mom.
Is there a woman who you consider your honorary mom—an aunt, grandmother, mentor, teacher? What role has she played in your life, and why is she so important to you?
5. Make a collage.
Take a break from written journal prompts and engage your artistic side. Collect photos, magazine clippings, ticket stubs and any other items that represent your relationship with your mother and make a colorful collage in your journal.
6. Describe a family Mother’s Day tradition.
Is there something your family does every Mother’s Day? Do you make brunch at home or have a barbecue or go to church? What do you do to make the day special? How long has this been a tradition in your family?
