It’s kind of counter-intuitive, but sometimes one of the hardest questions to answer is, “What do I want?”
Deciding whether it’ll be a BLT or a burger is one thing, but I’m talking about the big picture. Like, “What do you want out of life? What do you think would give you the deepest satisfaction?”
Go ahead, come up with some instant answers. Maybe you’ll say you want
- Plenty of money, or
- A long term, rewarding, and satisfying job, or
- Someone who loves me unconditionally, or
- Surfing, or playing golf every day, or
- Being able to help others who are in need, or
- Having power over many people, or
- Something else.
Good. Pick up your journal and write your answer. Now continue writing as you describe what your existence would be like if you had that thing.
Let your natural logic unfold the picture in all its details. “If I have this, then that will happen. If that happens, then I get the other. With the other I can …”
“If I have plenty of money, then I’ll travel. When I travel, life feels intense and fun. When things are fun, I get much more relaxed. When I’m relaxed …”
Get the idea? Follow the thread to the very center of your want. It may or may not resemble the place where you started. But it will often give you new insight – about who you are and where you’re going.
You may or may not discover an entirely new definition of what you want. The point here is that this journal writing process is a great way to get a grip on the true, detailed nature of your desire. And when you know that, you’re at last in a great position to go get it!
Finding the answer to the question, "Who Are You?" can help you figure out What You Want!
